Book Review: The Grandmaster & Other Short Stories by Chinmaya Desai

Greetings Booklovers,

Book: The Grandmaster & Other Short Stories by Chinmaya Desai

Its raining Short Story collections for me. I am not complaining ;)
Short stories are difficult to write as most well known Authors say. But it seems Short Stories are more sought after these days by readers.
A full fledged novel alternated with Short stories makes up for good number of books read in short time. Shh... That is what I am trying to achieve.

Lets welcome Debut Author Chinmaya Desai with his Debut Book: The Grandmaster & Other Short Stories. It is collection of 17 stories. Yes, these are short stories which end with a twist if not a bang. But they are written very well.

Story:

17 short stories. Each ends with a quote from a famous personality or proverb. I liked how it sort of ends with a singe.

What I liked:

I enjoyed reading this book. I kept it on hold for a long time. I am regretting that now. Sorry Author Chinmaya Desai.

Short & crisp stories. Each ends with a twist or a bang. Also love the quote or dialogues to mark end of story.

Each story is compact yet descriptive. They are written on myriad topics. About middle class life. About aspirations. About dreams. About Legacies. About human psychology. About crooked workings of human minds. About topics like Gay community or female infanticide.

The language used is a good and a lot of thought has been put in the stories about human psychology.
The language and story flow are very important in a book. Debut Book having these qualities is a good sign.

I laughed at the smart way to include your own name in the story, Chimaya Desai. Like Subhash Ghai's cameo appearance in his movies 😄 I was looking for those appearances in most stories.

The stories are so real-life. It felt as if your friend is telling you about a neighbor or something he/she heard. I was also trying to find connections and how the Author must have first thought about these stories. You have to read the book so you understand what I am trying to say 😀

The stories make you sigh, grin or introspect. Each a good one. I cant pick a favourite. But the first : Grandmaster is truly the Best. I also loved : The Foreign Trip, The Politician, The Woman in the Yellow Saree. The other stories are great & must read too.

What I wanted more:

More stories. An Interview where we can discuss these stories and how you thought about them.
