Guest Post: Why are men so dumb? to Sundari Venkatraman

Good day!
This should have been the first Guest post on my blog. But better late than sorry. So here we ask our favorite author and our Indian Mills & Boon Queen Sundari Venkatraman

Read more about The Smitten Husband by Sundari Venkatraman to understand my question ;)

Q: Why are men so dumb? :D Even Ram couldn’t understand that he had unintentionally pushed Sapna into marrying him. I wanted to give him a smack on his head for that ;)

A: Hello Nilima,

That’s quite a sweeping statement about men. :D

To answer your question, I don’t think men are dumb. Ram, the hero of my novella, The Smitten Husband, is very intelligent and highly creative to boot, being a jewellery designer and all that.

I have always been fascinated by the theory that “men are from Mars and women are from Venus”. There’s even a book on the subject by John Gray. We need to understand that men and women are wired differently. That doesn’t mean that one species is better or worse than the other. I have never agreed with feminists and would never agree with male chauvinists. Each one has a role to play.

To get back to my hero – Ram has grown up in a freedom-loving environment. His parents are easygoing and have never stopped their children from living their own lives. They never condemned their son-in-law Ranveer for running away immediately after marrying their eight-year-old daughter Chanda (The Runaway Bridegroom). Ram has always been able to speak the truth to his parents. There’s never been a need for secrecy in their home as all are upfront about everything.

A child needs to pretend or lie only when a parent is judgemental, intolerant or tries to pressure the child into doing what the parent wants. Sapna lives in such a family. Though her parents are nice people, they put her under pressure to get married as soon as possible. This is the reason why she is unable to say ‘no’ to her wedding with Ram; all the more because they aren’t asking for dowry and are ready to bear the wedding expenses.

But not once does she tell Ram that she cannot talk to her parents, before the wedding. Ram being what he is, upfront about everything, warns her from the beginning that he likes her and wants to marry her. He also tells her that he wouldn’t refuse the alliance from his end. She still doesn’t explain her situation to him. And again, that doesn’t make her “dumb” either. There are many women in our country who face this kind of a situation. I, for one, am glad that I could turn such a situation into a love story. What say!

I think you should hug Ram and hail him as Sapna’s “prince” instead of smacking him on his head. :D
Thank you for giving me an opportunity to tell you and your readers what a wonderful hero Ram is.

Thank you Nilima! Your question was like a bolt from the blue. You had me worried for a minute if I had created a bad impression about Ram. By the end of it, I am glad you asked what you did. It gave me an opportunity to explain what I meant. :D

Haha I am trying to catch Authors unaware always ;). It was my peeve for sometime after reading the book. But later my rational thinking balanced out both their views, situations, characteristics... Its similar in real-life relationships too na :) Hugs to all your Heroes but the heroines will go Jealous then... Hey new Title for your next book The Jealous Wife ;)
Not a bad idea for a new title. I did consider it for Bharat's story ;) Announcement coming soon on Fan Club page :D
