Book Review: The Floundering Author by Sundari Venkatraman

Good day!

Read The Floundering Author by Sundari Venkatraman. A lovely book which has all elements in a story: Dream, Passion, Love, Hard work, struggle, opposition, support, success.

I couldn't stop thinking about the story for 1 month. Here is what I thought about the book.

Story:

Jai Wadhwa has his life planned out. He has degree in IT from an international university and has worked 18 months at an MNC in Delhi. Now he sees his calling in writing and becoming a Best selling Author who makes pot loads of money too. He has given himself two years time to make this dream a reality. He has sent the manuscript of Book1 of his Trilogy to the best Publishers in India.
His dream is crashing down. But it sputters to life again when he hears from the commissioning officer, Ishika Chatterjee from one of the Best Publishers. He agrees to meet Ishika and falls for her in the first meeting.  He knows he wants to know this girl more. But it is not doing any good for his book and dream.
Ishika on the other hand loves Jai's writing and is now falling in love with the man himself. She knows Jai's book is really good and will get a response when showcased by her company. She is willing to try her best to get the book published. But it seems her opinion in the company isnt enough to get Jai a Publishing contract. Also Jai seems to be floundering after being faced with so many obstacles.

Will he bounce back or let go of his dream?
What do you do when your love is loosing hope in his dream project and what ever you do to make it work is not enough?

What I liked:

This novel is based on a fiction story of an Author and his struggle to get his book published. It shows different aspects of Book publishing, the traditional book publishing industry, importance to marketing, shelling out money to get your book in Bestseller list,... the tears, the frustration, the test of one's principles etc.

Even though this is a fictional story I know many Authors(personally too) who have gone through this struggle even though their books are very good and Bestsellers. I loved how Sundari Venkatraman has weaved the real life scenarios of Book Publishing with a fiction story. A budding love story no less.

As I have mentioned in Gobsmacked Review, Sundari Venkatraman's male protagonists are becoming relatable. The female protagonists have always been Emerging Superwomen. The Heroes are now almost raw and in sync with current generation. They are flawed but with many facets. But they also are evolving and self-correcting kind. So be warned, you will fall for them ;)

Jai is one such guy. I liked how meticulously he has planned his life and is sticking to his plans. Talk about investments for life, a small kitty for a sabbatical, following ones passion, self sustainable guy (can cook and keep house) and follows his passion with determination not as a passing hobby. His siblings are praise worthy but his parents make you glad yours are still bearable ;)

Ishika is opposite. She has loving parents and brother. She lives with them and they support her whole heartedly. She has a dream job and is paid well. She is good at her job but has gotten comfortable in it. She spends her weekends with friends and family. First half of book, I kept imagining her to break into a dance like Jacqueline Fernandez in Chittiyaan Kalaiyaan, movie Roy. Read the book and tell me if this description matches this heroine.

So when both of them meet over common ground of Publishing Jai's book its love at first sight.

I loved how Jai tried to keep his work and feelings for Ishika apart so that it didn't affect their business relationship.

I was feeling sorry for Ishika when she has to let Jai go so he can set himself up again as an Author without her help. Her turmoil, pull in 2-3 directions, guilt... was all evident. But the way she ends the Drama in her Job is Standing ovation worthy. It requires guts to do that. First I cursed her for bringing herself in the lime light but then certain stories need that ending. Trying not to give out spoilers here. Read the book fast & come lets discuss it ;)

I loved how Jai and Ishika have lives which are poles apart. But still loves finds them. They bear the ups and downs so that the other can be free in their lives and careers. I loved how both put so much efforts into their respective work life coz its their dream job.

The office politics, squeezing work out of their employees till burnout, the lechers/lazy bones/lime light hoggers/jealous lot/free loaders in every office, the rat race,... made me nostalgic and filled me gratitude for quitting that life :D

I am sure you will want to build a home in Mussoorie after reading about Jai's plans. OR want to try farming after reading about Jai's elder brother Dev. I want to be like Anya or rather I am doing exactly what Anya is doing by helping Authors in promoting their books.

Loved how the siblings came together to support Jai. It was a warm feeling to see so many people interested in seeing you grow and follow your passions. That is what Family is truly.

The end with summary of Jai's success and their love story was heartening. Almost like seeing your friend do well after knowing each of their struggles.

What I wanted more:

Some punishment to Mahesh Narang. Yes, he received a good one but a lil harsh one was needed. I think ;)
